There is a much more user friendly Work Center that can be found under your name, under Manage Notifications, in Message Center:
There will be two tabs - click on the Work Center tab (1) where you can open up a group such as Personal Inbasket and click on a message (2):
If you want to come back to it, there's even an option to click to mark it as unread (3)!
