Tips & Tricks for Public Sector: Using DRP over Safety Stock!

Many public sector entities have inventory, and planning/forecasting is typically not done in JDE. This is because public sector has no "sales" in the typical Supply/Demand framework. DRP is able to build suggested purchase orders based on Safety Stock, but building and maintaining this field was historically very burdensome and time-consuming.

In Release 24, Oracle made it possible to have the system calculate Safety Stock based on just the Item Ledger (F4111) activity, making it possible for public sector to build and maintain Safety Stock quickly and efficiently. Most public sector entities I've worked with have forecasted capital projects they complete each year, and these projects typically require inventory. JDE's forecasting functionality can be used to load this "demand" into the future months. Then, with DRP Generation set to consider Safety Stock (and obviously a bit more configuration for forecasting), JDE will have suggested purchase order messages for you. Denovo has set this up in PY about 10 years ago for a water district (safety stock alone), and it worked exactly as they had hoped! The upkeep and commitment to update Safety Stock prevented this from moving into PD. However, we are working closely with another water district who plans on using the new Safety Stock automated build along with loading their capital project forecasted work. They want JDE to do the work for them - as should we all! Once this is all done, they fully intend on taking this local and national user group meetings to share the great news!
