Have you noticed these icons in Submitted Jobs before? Or Databrowser?
These are sort buttons. If you click them once, your grid will be sorted in ascending order on that field. If you click it a second time (on the same column), it will sort in descending order. You may not have to use these frequently, but when you're trying to see if you have a job is still running in WSJ for example, you can hit the Status sort icon twice, and any Processing jobs will appear at the top. If you are a frequent Databrowser user, you likely are already using this quick sort.
A Grid Format can do multiple-column sorting, but for a quick single-field sort, these are very helpful!
