The Belt Railway Company of Chicago, completed a successful Disaster Recovery test with Denovo

The Belt Railway Company of Chicago, is the largest switching terminal railroad in the United States.  Every 24 hours, clearing yard employees classify between 40 and 50 miles of trains and dispatch more than 8,400 rail cars.  With Chicago being the largest hub of the railroad industry, very few rail cars travel trans-continentally without coming through Chicago where Belt Railway efficiently separates, classifies, and re-blocks trains for cross-country departure.

The Belt Railway wanted to focus on their business and their customers instead of their back-office ERP systems.  In 2013, they partnered with Denovo to provide a bundled solution to manage their ERP application.  Since then, Denovo has provided application and technology Managed Services, Cloud Infrastructure Hosting and Managed Disaster Recovery (MDR) for their JD Edwards ERP system.

“Our company views our Disaster Recovery plans as a critical component to our overall business continuity strategy.  Our partner, Denovo, is a key part of that success plan and acts as an extension of our Belt Railway team.  The testing that we have conducted this year with Denovo has given us a high level of confidence that we will be prepared in the event an unplanned outage was to occur.”  Nick Chodorow, Chief Information Officer, Belt Railway Company

To ensure each customer’s MDR environment will be available should a disaster ever arise, Denovo completes a disaster recovery test periodically for our MDR customers.  The Belt Railway Company has elected for two rounds of tests in 2018 and has just completed their second successful DR test this year.  This test involved a simulated complete loss of their JD Edwards EnterpriseOne application and data.  The recovery included their JD Edwards Enterprise One application and OneView reporting, Deployment and JAS Web Servers and Oracle database.

The Belt Railway Company has an IT service level agreement with their business that in the event of an unexpected downtime, the applications must be back up and running in 2 hours or less.  The successful test met each of the key metrics:

  • Recovery Point Objective (RPO) of 2 hours for the Oracle database recovery
    • Recovery Point Actual (RPA) achieved in 4 minutes
  • Recovery Time Objective (RTO) of 2 hours for the recovery operation and DR validation
    • Recovery Time Actual (RTA) achieved in 1.9 hours

“A comprehensive Disaster Recovery plan is a key part of an IT strategy to maximize uptime of critical business systems.   We value our partnership with Belt Railway and are pleased to provide a bundled Cloud Managed Services solution that enables them to focus on their business while we manage their ERP application and infrastructure.”  Marty Snella, Chief Executive Officer, Denovo

This is a great example of a company having a tried and true process in place and a partner that understands disaster recovery.  Stats show that 1 out of 3 companies have not adequately prepared for a disaster.  Denovo has successfully completed over 385 DR tests and over 22 FEMA failovers.  Denovo can help any customer, any size, in any industry to have confidence that their critical IT systems will always be available.
